Three paths, one goal: sustainability at Gira, KEUCO and TRILUX

In view of global challenges such as resource scarcity, climate change and rising energy demand, the construction industry has a greater responsibility than ever before. Today, building components must not only be functional and aesthetic, but also durable, efficient and environmentally friendly. The BERÜHRUNGSPUNKTE partners Gira, KEUCO and TRILUX take this responsibility seriously – and demonstrate with innovative approaches and product solutions in the fields of building technology, bathroom design and lighting how sustainability can be achieved in detail.

Gira: Modular thinking

With System 55, Gira has developed a modular solution that not only enables design diversity, but also makes an active contribution to conserving resources. Similar to a modular system, frames and functional inserts can be freely combined and exchanged as required. Over 300 functional inserts and eight design lines with more than 90 frame designs open up almost unlimited possibilities.

This means that colours, materials or functions can be changed without structural alterations – whether for modernisation, conversion or a new design requirement. The result: less material consumption, less installation effort – and maximum design freedom.

The Gira Esprit Linoleum Multiplex switch range is even more environmentally friendly. It combines two natural materials made from renewable raw materials and reduces the carbon footprint by a full 75% compared to a Gira E2 reference frame made of plastic (This reduction was determined on the basis of a life cycle assessment in accordance with ISO 14040/EN 15804 of a single frame made from recycled material compared to a single frame made from new material (cradle-to-gate)).

KEUCO: Water conservation made easy

Sustainability is particularly tangible in the bathroom, as this is where we see how responsibly water resources are used in everyday life. KEUCO meets this challenge with a clear focus on efficiency – for example, with its high-quality PLAN blue fittings. These are optimised for a flow rate of just five litres per minute without compromising on comfort. Precisely integrated technology intelligently regulates the water flow and ensures permanently economical consumption. This not only protects the environment, but also reduces operating costs in the long term.

In addition, KEUCO focuses on sophisticated product design that combines aesthetics and function with ecological responsibility: This includes resource-saving manufacturing, retrofittable surface-mounted fittings in the range, durable materials and the repairability of the products. One example is the specially developed LED modules in KEUCO mirror cabinets, light mirrors and cosmetic mirrors: they provide over 30,000 hours of powerful lighting and are designed so that they can be easily replaced by qualified personnel – instead of having to be disposed of.

TRILUX: Replace instead of replace

Lighting is a key element of contemporary architecture. But what can be done when existing lighting systems are outdated or new requirements for efficiency and light quality arise? TRILUX pursues a sustainable approach: preserve rather than replace. Thanks to their modular design, the electronic components of many luminaires can be easily replaced while the existing housing continues to be used. This allows existing installations to be upgraded with modern LED technology – without dismantling, without interfering with the building fabric and with significantly reduced material usage. This extends the service life of the luminaire and minimises its ecological footprint.

The TRILUX Refurbishment Tool also provides targeted support for planning a complete luminaire replacement as part of a renovation project. With just a few details about the existing luminaire, the smart online tool provides concrete suggestions for suitable 1:1 renovation solutions – including individual savings potential in terms of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. In this way, the Renovation Assistant makes an important contribution to driving forward the LED transformation in existing buildings.

Successful renovation

The refurbishment tool thus makes an important contribution to driving forward the LED transformation in existing buildings. The best example of this is the new logistics centre of e-commerce specialist Snowleader. Here, the outdated iodide luminaires were replaced by 400 Mirona Fit LED. Thanks to the high energy efficiency of the luminaires of up to 170 lm/W, energy costs for lighting have fallen significantly compared to the previous conventional solution – in combination with the LiveLink lighting management system, by over 84 percent.

Whether through modular systems, resource-saving lighting solutions or water-saving and durable bathroom products, all three brands prove that ecological responsibility, technological innovation and design standards do not have to be contradictory – instead, they form the basis for sustainable construction.
