Exhibition tip: SCHÖNER WOHNEN – Architectural Visions from 1900 to Today

2 min read

How do we want to live? This question doesn't just concern urban planners, architects and designers - it concerns us all. Our home is a place of retreat, an expression of our personality and part of our social interaction. The exhibition “SCHÖNER WOHNEN – Architectural Visions from 1900 to Today” at the Kunsthalle Tübingen is dedicated to this highly topical subject from an unusual perspective: architectural drawing.

Until October 19, 2025, the exhibition shows how artists and architects have sketched, planned and sometimes rejected their ideas of housing and living together for over a century. On display are not only classic architectural drawings, but also models, spatial concepts and sculptures - from expressionist utopias to the housing and urban concepts of the 1920s and 1960s to the anti-utopias of the post-war period and postmodernism.

At the same time, the exhibition also opens up a view of current topics: What new possibilities do digital tools and AI offer? And what does a humane, urban life of the future look like?

A special highlight: an original capsule of the legendary Nakagin Capsule Tower by Kishō Kurokawa, which was demolished in Tokyo in 2022. The Kunsthalle Tübingen is the only institution in Germany to exhibit one of these architectural living modules in the Skulpturenhof.

The exhibition is curated by Dr. Nicole Fritz with the support of Zita Hartel and in cooperation with the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main.
