Architecture Biennale 2025: Carlo Ratti appointed curator

1 min read

The Italian architect and professor Carlo Ratti has been appointed curator of the 19th Architecture Biennale in Venice! This makes him the first Italian director since Massimiliano Fuksas in 2000. The Biennale will take place from 24 May to 23 November 2025 and will once again attract numerous visitors to the fascinating lagoon city.

Life and Studies

Carlo Ratti was born in Turin in 1971 and studied in his home city as well as in Paris and Cambridge. He heads the Senseable City Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and also teaches at the Politecnico di Milano. He also runs his own office with branches in Turin, London and New York. Together with the renowned architecture firm BIG, he realised the green "Capitaspring" skyscraper in Singapore two years ago.

„We architects like to think of ourselves as smart, but real intelligence is everywhere. Faced with a world on fire, in architecture we need to utilise all the intelligence that surrounds us.“ (Carlo Ratti)

Innovative way of thinking

In contrast to his predecessors, such as Hashim Sarkis, Lesley Lokko and Alejandro Aravena, Carlo Ratti takes a technology-led approach to urban research and urban development. This was also evident at the Manifesta in Prishtina, which he accompanied from an urbanistic perspective and for which he and his team developed an AI-based study of public space.

His technological mindset promises a fascinating and forward-looking Architecture Biennale 2025, where BERÜHRUNGSPUNKTE will once again be present. Get a little foretaste now and take a look at our Meetingpoint from previous years. Click here for a look back and our impressions.
