In 20th-century Milan, a design culture emerged that continues to shape the city today: rational, industrial, precise, with a sense of materiality and proportion. This is also evident in the lively Brera district, where history and the present overlap in cobbled streets and courtyards. Between the art academy, small workshops, galleries and showrooms, there is a creative milieu unlike any other.
Around Brera, the city unfolds as a network of exciting design locations. Worth seeing are the Triennale Milano museum and the Zona Tortona, where old industrial halls house large-scale brand presentations. In the future districts of Porta Nuova and CityLife, architecture by Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Pelli Clarke Pelli marks the transition to a modern cosmopolitan city, and the Fondazione Prada also sets architectural accents with its ensemble transformed by OMA. The ADI Design Museum, on the other hand, offers space for the tried and tested.
Milan is a design laboratory: green infrastructure, digital planning and densification are being boldly trialled, while design remains a perennial favourite. Since the ‚Salone del Mobile‘ in the 1960s, creative minds from all over the world have been coming to the city and using it as an internationally renowned testing ground for parametric design and smart neighbourhoods. Milan remains a magnet for young studios and brands.
The proximity to greats such as Matteo Thun and Patricia Urquiola meets a scene that celebrates stylistic breaks, dealing with sustainability, connectedness and material experiments, new locations and usage concepts. With ‚Milan Design Week‘ and ‚Salone del Mobile‘, there is also a world stage where even small studios can gain international visibility and come into contact with global brands.
Once a year, all of this becomes palpable. During Milan Design Week, patios become exhibition spaces, apartments become temporary galleries, and the courtyards of the historic Università Statale are transformed into poetic installation landscapes. This special atmosphere is particularly tangible in Brera. Guests are invited not only to see the Italian metropolis, but to discover it as a place of design. Experience Milan as a city of design, meet us at Milan Design Week and breathe in the creative air of Brera with us!
