Futuro House: Modernist home in Munich

The ellipsoid is formed by a glossy plastic shell resting on eight legs. The windows look like flat alien eyes. A trapdoor in the bottom half can be opened to reveal a flight of aircraft stairs which visitors can use to explore the interior.

Unfortunately, the interior from the 1960s has not been restored. But the spirit of its period of origin, its faith in technical progress, can still be felt. The Finnish architect Matti Suuronen had planned a variety of uses for this innovative structure, such as a mountain cabin, a weekend house, a classroom or a doctor’s office.

Nobody knows how many units of this first series production plastic house were actually built worldwide – the figure could be around 60. The Munich specimen is now expected to stay there for at least one year. Whoever can visit it should do so by all means, since: “People should not live in black-and-white boxes. The forms derived from nature are much more pleasant.“ (Matti Suuronen, 1969)
